Klay Thompson appears ready to begin the next chapter of his decorated NBA career, with the veteran sharpshooter reportedly expected to join the Miami Heat following a contract buyout with the Dallas Mavericks.
Dallas announced Friday that it had reached a buyout agreement with Thompson, ending his two-season run with the franchise. The five-time All-Star was scheduled to earn $17.5 million during the 2026-27 season. Once Thompson clears waivers, he plans to sign a two-year deal with Miami worth nearly $13 million, including a player option for the second season, according to ESPN.
The move gives Thompson an opportunity to return to championship contention after a difficult season in Dallas. The 36-year-old averaged 11.7 points and 2.1 rebounds last season while shooting 38.3 percent from three-point range. Despite his reduced role, Thompson remains one of basketball’s most accomplished perimeter shooters, ranking fourth in NBA history with 2,899 made three-pointers.
For Miami, Thompson could provide exactly the type of veteran shooting and championship experience needed for a deep postseason run. His ability to stretch defenses should create additional space for Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo while giving head coach Erik Spoelstra another proven weapon in high-pressure situations.
Thompson built his legacy during 13 seasons with the Golden State Warriors, winning four NBA championships and becoming one half of the legendary “Splash Brothers” alongside Stephen Curry.
Now, with his career entering its later stages, Miami represents another opportunity to chase a championship. Thompson may no longer be the dominant two-way star of his prime, but his shooting, experience and championship pedigree could make him an important piece of the Heat’s title aspirations.
